Music video for New Zealand band Minuit. 2005
‘Fuji’ as a song has a grungy, powerful and somewhat aggressive feel. The video speaks of transformation and perception, moving from an old darkness into a new beginning.
36 VIEWS OF MT FUJI
The lyrics say: “I’m like 36 views of Mt Fuji”. 36 views of Mt Fuji are a series of Japanese silk paintings painted in the 18th century by Hokusai. They depict Mt Fuji seen from many different angles, seasons and social structures representing God, power, eternity, wisdom and beauty.
In the video we utilize the paintings to show Minuit as a group of traveling nomads “I’m like a nomad and this is my tribe”. We also reflect on the meaning of the paintings in the transformations of lead singer Ruth, changes in lighting, and shifting from night to morning.
